Proper position
- Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart, and grasp a barbell in front of you with your hands shoulder-width apart and palms facing your body.
- Keeping your knees slightly bent, lean forward until your torso is between parallel and about 30° above the horizontal plane, with your head raised. The bar should hang in front of your body. This is the starting position.
Movement and breathing
- Inhale and hold your breath as you pull the bar towards your waist.
- Keep your elbows in and close to your body so that they move backwards as you pull the bar up.
- Concentrate on pulling with your back and shoulder muscles, and raise your elbows as high as you can.
- Hold your breath until you reach the end of the movement.
